This pre-field workshop introduces participants to the Growing Participator Approach (GPA)—a proven, field-tested method used by cross-cultural workers around the world.
Rather than treating language acquisition as a purely technical skill, GPA understands language learning as inherently cognitive, relational, and spiritual—a process of entering another culture through shared life and presence. Participants learn how to plan language sessions that are rooted in relationship, work attentively with a language helper, develop a sustainable long-term learning plan, and assess progress over time.
The five-day experience also includes guided practice with a language helper, allowing participants to experience the approach firsthand, not just hear about it.
Gabriela Tiessen serves as the primary facilitator and has spent over twenty years walking alongside language learners. Having lived and served in Central Asia, the Caucasus, and the Balkans, she helps workers learn language as a relational and formational practice—one rooted in presence, participation, and shared life within their host communities.
Learning Language in Community will be held in the Niles–Buchanan area of beautiful southwest Michigan. The specific venue is still to be determined, and we'll share full details with registrants as soon as it's confirmed.
The area is about a 30-minute drive from South Bend International Airport and about a 2-hour drive from both Midway International Airport and O’Hare International Airport in Chicago, IL.
